Roy McClelland is a Consultant Psychiatrist at Belfast City Hospital and Professor of Mental Health at Queen’s University. A former Director of the School of Clinical Medicine, he has had a long-standing interest in undergraduate and multidisciplinary postgraduate medical and healthcare education.

He has been closely involved with postgraduate programmes in healthcare ethics and law, addictions and cognitive therapy. He currently Chairs the N Ireland Advisory Group on Informatics Training for Health and Social Care Professionals and is a Trustee of the N Ireland Trauma and Transformation Trust.

Nationally within Ireland, Professor McClelland is Chairman of the Irish Association of Suicidology and a member of the Neurosciences Committee of the Health Research Board, Dublin. Within the UK, he is a member of several Department of Health initiatives in relation to clinical information management and confidentiality.

In addition to external examining work over many years, he has been closely involved with the Royal College of Psychiatrists educational programmes as a former sub-Dean and Chairman of the Overseas Doctors Training Committee.

He is actively involved in mental health research, particularly in the epidemiology of mental illness, including suicide, and the evaluation of health services. He is co-ordinator of a European project developing guidelines and standards in confidentiality for healthcare professionals, and Chairman of the Healing Through Remembering Project.
